I Spy Picture Bag

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

This I-Spy activity is aimed towards school-age children. This is a game meant to be enjoyed and played with family and/or friends. Through this activity, children are encouraged to be creative. Furthermore, this will assist them in developing descriptive language skills and improve their fine motor skills. By following the step-by-step instructions, children will be able to succeed in creating their very own I Spy game!

Supplies:

  • 2 Sheet of white paper

  • 1 Sheet of black paper

  • Sharpies

  • Scissors

  • Pencil

  • Pen

  • Eraser

  • 1 Storage bag gallon

  • Color pencil or Crayons

  • Ruler

Steps:

Step 1: Measure

First, take your ruler and measure the width of the storage bag gallon. Next, write down the measurement on a piece of paper. I wrote the measurements on a sticky

paper that looks like a polar bear!

Step 2: Cut your white paper

Second, take your white sheet of paper and ruler. Your paper has two long sides and two short sides. Align the ruler to one of the long sides of your sheet of paper. Make sure that the edge of the ruler is touching the edge of the long side of your paper.

Next, make a mark on the number that corresponds to the measurement recorded on step 1. Because my bag is 10 5/8 inches wide, I am going to draw a line above the line on the ruler that marks 10 5/8 inches.

Make a mark on the other long side of the paper, also on the number that corresponds to the measurement recorded on step 1. This time, your ruler should be on top of your paper. Be sure to get as close to the edge of the paper as possible but leave some space to draw make a mark.

Lastly, draw a line across the paper from one mark to the other and use your scissors to cut on the line. Remember, always keep your eyes on the scissors

while cutting.

You are going to be left with a big and small

piece of paper. Keep the biggest piece.

Step 3: Cut your black paper

We are now going to repeat step 2 but instead of using a white sheet of paper, we are going to need a black sheet of paper!

Take your black sheet of paper and ruler.

Be sure to get as close to the edge of the paper as possible but leave some space to make a mark.

Lastly, draw a line across the paper from one

mark to the other and use your scissors to cut

on the line. Remember, always keep your eyes

on the scissors while cutting.

You are going to be left with a big and small

piece of paper. Keep the biggest piece.

Step 4: Draw

Now it's time to draw! First take your white sheet of paper and place it in landscape position. That means that the longer sides are top to bottom and the short sides are to the right and left. Take a look at the picture for a good example! You can begin drawing! Your drawing can be as simple or as complicated as you want. If you do not want to draw, then you can write.

Step 5: Trace

Open your bag and place your drawing inside the bag. If your paper is not flat inside the bag, take it out from the bag and cut your paper a little more so that it is small enough to lie flat. After you are done cutting, place the paper inside the bag. If it stays flat. Next, take your sharpies and begin tracing.

Step 6: Color

Coloring time! First remove your white paper from the bag and turn it over with the drawing facing down. Then, insert the white sheet of paper back inside the bag.

You can start coloring! Remember to color inside the lines and be very careful not to touch your drawing with your hand. If you do, the ink on the bag will stain your hand, and your drawing will start to disappear.

Now that you are almost done coloring, it might be hard not to place your hand on top of your drawings.

To protect your drawings, place an extra plastic bag on top of your drawing near the area that you still need to color. Only place the bag down on your drawings if they are completely dry. If your drawing is still a little wet, the ink will stick to your second bag and this can ruin your drawing. You can place your hand and your arm on the second bag and continue coloring.

Step 7: Fill your bag

After you are you are done coloring, remove the white sheet of paper from the bag and place the black piece of paper inside the bag.

Step 8: Create a flashlight

On a separate white sheet of paper, draw a flashlight. Make sure to draw the light coming from the flashlight. Then, use your pen to trace the flashlight. Next, erase any pencil marking on the flashlight and the light, but avoid erasing the pencil markings on the oval shaped part of the light. Afterwards, cut out and color your flashlight. You can use whatever colors you want. Finally, erase the pencil markings of the oval shape.

Step 9: Time to play!

You are ready to play I Spy! Remember to always begin with “I Spy with my little eye something that…”

Wan to create another I Spy game? Turn your plastic bag over and you have another empty space to draw and color. You can pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol to your cotton swab and wipe to remove the brand name from the bag.
