Oreo Pops

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

This is a yummy, simple, and versatile treat. In this post, it will be shown how to make smiley faces, but there are many more options for decorative themes! The Oreo Pop is basically a blank canvas, just waiting for someone to express themselves on it. Because we are using candy melts that require a microwave oven, preschool aged children may need assistance, school-aged children may just need a little supervision, and most adolescents could make these independently. It’s a fun project for everyone to get creative with! This activity will foster an environment for creativity and imagination to flourish. It also encourages fine motor and manipulation skills.

You Will Need:

Lollipop sticks or popsicle sticks

Candy Melts (using yellow but any color will do)

Double Stuffed Oreos; crucial to have double stuffed so there’s enough crème to place the stick in

Candy Eyes (these can be substituted with any candy like M&Ms or Skittles)

Candy Mustaches

Pull-apart Twizzlers, cut into 0.5 to 1-inch pieces (for mouth) OR

Melted Chocolate (can be chocolate chips or bar) for dawing eyes, mouth, mustaches, etc.; will need a sandwich bag and scissors for if using chocolate

Microwave safe medium bowls

A cup (optional, but great for dipping easily)

Baking sheet

Parchment paper

Instructions

This activity can get messy relatively easily, so I like to cover the surface I’m working on with an old cloth or newspaper. Before starting, remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and always put safety first. Ask an adult to help you with microwaving the candy and cutting the Twizzlers beforehand if using.

Step 1: Place parchment paper on a baking sheet. Set aside.

Step 2: Next, insert lollipop or popsicle stick into the crème of the Oreo while gently squeezing the two cookies together to ensure the stick does not push the cookies apart. Set aside on the parchment paper while prepping the other ingredients.

Step 3:

After preparing the Oreo pops, melt candy melts in a bowl according to the instructions.

My instructions advised starting with 1 minute on defrost, then stirring with well with a spoon.

If it is not totally melted after that first minute, use 30 second intervals on defrost until smooth.

If using a cup for dipping, transfer melted candy into the cup.

Use a spoon to guide the melted candy from the bowl to the cup to minimize spilling.

Step 4:

Now it’s time to coat the Oreos!

Dip the Oreo pop into the candy melts and coat completely.

Sometimes you have to move the Oreo around in the melted candy a little to coat it completely.

Tap off any excess candy into the bowl or cup before placing it on the parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Step 5: Next is where the most fun comes in! It’s time to decorate. Add the candy eyes, mustache, and/or Twizzler piece for the mouth before the candy coating hardens. If you only want to add eyes and a

mustache or eyes and a Twizzler, or even just

eyes, it’s fine! The possibilities are endless.

Step 6: Finally, Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes and enjoy.

Want to make your own facial expressions without candy pieces? Try this method using melted chocolate!

After coating the Oreo pops with the candy melts, move them to the fridge so the candy coating can harden completely. This should take about 20 to 30 minutes.

Next, melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Start by microwaving the chocolate for 30 to 45 seconds. Stir the chocolate with a spoon. If it still needs more melting time, put it in the microwave at 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.

Scoop the melted chocolate into a sandwich bag. Seal the sandwich bag once you’ve added your chocolate. Cut a tiny hole in one of the corners of the sandwich bag with scissors. Be careful with the

cutting and don’t be afraid to ask an adult for help!

Now you have a homemade piping bag!

Take the chilled Oreo pops out of the fridge. If you can run your finger over the coating without it sticking to you, you’re good to go. Hold the bag of chocolate over the Oreo pop and squeeze it to draw eyes, nose, mouth, or whatever else you want!

Tip: if the chocolate gets too stiff while you are decorating, massage the bag with your hands a few times. Your body heat and the added energy makes the chocolate easy to handle again!

Let chill for another 10-15 minutes and enjoy!

Now your Oreo Pops are decorated and ready to eat!

What other Oreo faces or creatures can you make?
