DIY Paint

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

Here is a recipe for kid-friendly, homemade paint. This paint is made out of 3 ingredients: Flour, Water, and Food Dye. This can be stored in an air-tight container after you are done making the paint. It is appropriate for all ages, and can even be used as finger paint! This activity would be great for sensory exploration and fine motor skill development. Children can practice grasping, mixing, and painting with this fun activity!

Materials:

· 9 Tbsp. flour

· 1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp. hot water

· 6-8 drops food coloring

· Bowl or cup

· Fork or whisk

· Painting supplies: paper, paintbrushes, newspaper

Directions:

Measure 9 tablespoons of flour into your cup or bowl. Add the hot water and whisk thoroughly. Make sure to get all clumps out. You can use an electric mixer as well to get all the clumps out.

If your mixture is too thick, you can add more water. If your mixture is too runny, you can add more flour until you reach your desired thickness.

Next, add 6-8 drops of food coloring to your flour and water mixture. Stir well. You can add less food coloring to get a lighter shade or more food coloring to get a more vibrant shade. Once you’ve reached your desired color, you are ready to paint.

Before painting, you will want to put down newspaper, a tray, or a grocery bag so the paint does not leak onto your table.

You can mix your paint colors together to make new colors. I mixed yellow paint and blue paint on a paper plate to make green paint. You can mix red paint and yellow paint to make orange paint. Mixing red paint with blue paint will make purple paint.

Happy painting!!
