Banana Sushi

Updated: Jun 14, 2021

This is a sweet twist on sushi that will get you excited to make your own snack! Using things that are easily found in every kitchen, the possibilities are endless! These sushi rolls are customizable to each individual’s liking. School-aged and adolescent children will love this activity because it needs little to no guidance from an adult. Preschool-aged children may need some supervision and guidance with this activity, but they will love making their very own banana sushi!

You will need:

  • Plastic Knife

  • 1 Banana

  • Peanut butter

  • 1 Flour Tortilla

  • Optional: nutella, jam and, chocolate chips

Activity Steps:

Step 1: Preparation

First, make sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Clear a place to make your sushi and make sure the surface is clean. After, gather all the supplies that are needed in order to make your banana sushi such as your tortilla, banana, peanut butter, plastic knife, and other toppings you may want to add to your sushi. You can also get a paper plate if you would like to make your sushi on top of it! Now let’s begin making our banana sushi!

Step 2: Lay and Spread Your Toppings!

First, lay your flour tortilla down on a clean, flat surface or on a paper plate if you would like. The tortilla will act like the seaweed and rice in sushi. It will hold all the toppings and bananas when we roll it up later on! Then, take the plastic knife and spread as much peanut butter on the tortilla as you would like!

Reminder: You can always ask an adult for help if you need help spreading the peanut butter.

After spreading your peanut butter, you can customize your banana sushi. You can add any type of jelly, nutella, chocolate chips or anything you would like to make it yummy and delicious for you! These toppings will act like the ingredients that you will find in sushi rolls. But, make sure not to add more than 2 types of toppings so that we can roll it all up at the end.

Step 3: Add That Banana On Top!

Next, take your banana peel it, and throw away your banana peel. After, place your banana on top of the tortilla. The banana will be like the main ingredient found in sushi rolls such as crab, avocado, and various fish!

Step 4: Turn it Horizontally!

After adding your banana on top of the tortilla, make sure your banana is close to the edge of the tortilla. Now, turn your tortilla so that the banana is making a straight line from left to right. This will help us when we roll it up into a sushi roll.

Step 5: Roll and Cut!

Now it is time to roll up our sushi roll!! First, begin by rolling the tortilla forward and around the banana making sure to cover the entire banana. Make sure to roll it up nice and tight so that the banana and the toppings will stay together inside the tortilla and make it easier for us to cut it into pieces. Now that we have our sushi roll all rolled up, take the same plastic knife that you used earlier to spread on your peanut butter, and cut your sushi roll into equal-sized pieces. You can cut them into small pieces or big pieces depending on how you like the size of your sushi.

Reminder: You can ask an adult for help when rolling and cutting your sushi roll.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Sushi!

After cutting up your sushi into equal-sized pieces, place your pieces of banana sushi on a plate and serve! You can eat it with your hands or eat with chopsticks just like real sushi!
