Worry Monster Box

Updated: Oct 24, 2021

The Worry Monster Box is a tool that can be used to calm and distance yourself from your anxieties, fears, and worries. It is a shoe box that you are able to decorate however you want. You will be able to write down what you're struggling with, and feed it to your worry monster. Once you feed it to your monster, it gets “eaten up” and can start to go away and then you can distance yourself from the anxiety, worry, or fear you're having. You can leave them in the box for as long as you want, until you know longer have that anxiety or fear, then you can take it out, rip it up and throw it away!

Supplies:

  • Any color and size shoe box

  • Glue

  • Construction Paper

  • Scissors

  • Decoration Supplies

    • Examples: Markers, puff balls, pipe cleaners, glitter glue, stickers

Activity Steps:

Step 1: Before we begin, make sure you have gathered all of your supplies that you will need to make your Worry Monster Box! Your shoe box, your glue, your construction paper, your scissors, and all of the decorations that you are going to use.

Step 2: First, you want to make sure that there is nothing left inside the shoe box. So, go ahead and open the shoe box and if there is anything in it, take it out. We want our shoe box to be completely empty!

Step 3: Next, it is time to cover our shoe box in construction paper. You can choose any color that you want. What you want to do is take a piece of construction paper and put glue on one side of the paper. Then, you want to place the piece of paper on the top of the box, and push down so the paper sticks to the box. Then, rub the paper so that the glue sticks to the box. After you have done that, you want to go ahead and cut any extra paper that isn't on the box off so it is not hanging off the box. If you don’t want to use the scissors, you could also fold the paper over and glue the extra paper down onto your box as well. Once you have done that, you can continue doing this with whatever color construction paper you want until the whole box is covered up!

Step 4: Now that you have covered your Worry Monster Box, it is time to decorate your box to look like a monster! You can write on it, you can put googly eyes on it, you can glue puff balls and pipe cleaners to it, you can even make a design out of your puff balls and pipe cleaners. You can put stickers all over it, you can color it with your markers. For my Worry Box, I am going to use puff balls, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes. I am going to put my white puff balls on the opening of my shoe box so that it looks like my monster has teeth! I am also going to put googly eyes on it, and also make horns out of pipe cleaners.

Tip: Decorating your box is an opportunity to show off your fun arts and crafts skills! Decorate your box however you want, it is your monster box!

Step 5: After you have decorated your box to your liking, you're all done! Now you can put this Worry Monster Box somewhere safe where you will always know where it is. When something going on in your life starts to feel too heavy or you can’t stop thinking about it, these are the worries that you can feed to your worry monster box. Your worry monster box is there to hold things for you and there to eat those worries up. So, you can take a piece of paper and write or draw what you are feeling, and feed it to your monster.

Some of the worries I am going to write down and put in my Worry Monster Box are going to the doctor because the tools scare me and I am also going to draw a shot because getting a shot makes me very nervous. It is okay that things make you nervous or scared, but that is what our Worry Monster Box is for! Our box is great at listening, and can really help us not be so nervous. By feeding our worries to our box, it will make us feel less nervous, try it out, you will feel so much better!
