Spring Flower

Updated: Jun 14, 2021

Making a Spring flower with your name is a unique and simple craft activity for younger school age kids to make in the spring or summer time! Only a few supplies are needed! They are able to work on fine motors skills by cutting and writing. Also preschoolers can practice spelling out their name or a different word by writing it on the flower petals! Adult help and supervision will be needed when cutting and writing out their name/word. This name/word flower will be colorful, unique and look great displayed around your house! You can even make a name/word flower with your favorite word on it!

What you will need:

Scissors

Marker/Pencil

Tape or Glue

1 piece of yellow paper

1 piece of green paper

1 piece of any color paper

How to make the flowers:

Step 1: First you are going to gather all the materials that you will need to make the flower. It is a good idea to work on a hard surface such as a table or countertop when making your flower.

Step 2: Next you are going to take your marker or pencil and begin to draw a stem for your flower out of the green paper. Remember you want your stem to be in the shape of a rectangle and it should be a long rectangle to resemble an actual flower stem. After your stem is drawn you are going to draw out two leaves on the green paper for your flower. The leaves will look like two half circles connected together.

Step 3: Now you are ready to start making the center of your flower! To make your center you will need to grab your yellow piece of paper and fold the paper horizontal one time. Once your paper is folded you are going to draw a half of a circle with your pencil or marker on the edge of the fold.

Step 4: Then you are going to make the petals of your flower using the letters in your name or any word! To make the petals of your flower you are going to use whichever color paper you would like. I decided to use pink paper to make my petals with. Once you have picked out your paper you then will fold the paper horizontally one time. Next you are going to draw out as many half circles that are needed to spell out your name/word. Each petal will have one letter of your name/word on it. I cut out 6 petals to spell out the word spring.

Step 5: Now you are ready to grab your scissors and cut out the stem, and leaves of your flower. Place a small piece of tape on the back side of each leaf and tape it down to the side of the stem with the marker on it. You can also use glue if you would like.

Step 6: Next you are going to cut out the center of your flower that you drew on the yellow paper. You will cut around the half circle that you had drawn. Now you will have a complete circle cut out. Place a small piece of tape on the back of the yellow circle and tape it down to the back side of the stem (the side with the marker on it is the back side). Remember to place the yellow circle at the top of the green stem.

Step 7: Then you are ready to cut out the petals for your flower! You will cut around each half circle that you had drawn out. Now you will have complete circles cut out. Place a small piece of tape on the back of each circle and tape it down to the back side of the yellow circle. Remember to arrange your circles around the yellow center to look like flower petals. If you have a long name or word it will be helpful to make smaller sized circles for your petals.

Step 8: Lastly you are going to take your marker and spell out your name or another word on each flower petal! You will write one letter on each flower petal using your black marker. Your name flower is now completely finished and will look great displayed in your house or in a small pot!
