Self-esteem Mirror

How often do you use your mirror? Frequently, if not every day, right? How often do you think about your abilities when looking in the mirror? Less frequently, right? With this activity, we will decorate a mirror with positive affirmations so that every day when we look in the mirror, we are reminded of our talents, strengths, and skills which can put us in a positive mood. Starting the day with a positive mood is always good! Tip: If you do not have a mirror, there is an alternative activity at the bottom of the activity steps.

Supplies:

  • Mirror

  • Construction Paper

  • Pencil/Pen/Markers

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • String (For Alternative Activity Only)

Activity Steps:

Before you begin, make sure you are doing this activity on a clean and flat surface.

Step 1: First, we will create positive affirmations. A positive affirmation is a positive statement such as “I am fearless”. When you repeat an affirmation a lot, you begin to believe that it is true. Repeating positive affirmations can help build high self-esteem.

Self-esteem is being confident in your skills and abilities. Get a sheet of construction paper and a writing tool. For this step, I will use a pencil but you can use whatever you would like! Then, using my pencil I am going to write down my abilities and skills that I want to put on my mirror.

Remember, these affirmations are supposed and lift you up every time you look in the mirror. For example, a positive affirmation I can tell myself is that I am compassionate. You can write as many positive affirmations as you want just be sure they will all fit on your mirror.

Step 2: Now that you have your list, we will draw the speech bubbles. You’ve probably seen a speech bubble in a book you’ve read recently. Speech bubbles are used to express what a character in a book is saying. We will use speech bubbles on our mirror so that when we look in the mirror and see our reflection, it will appear that we are saying these affirmations about ourselves.

Get your construction paper and whatever you chose to write with. Now, using my pencil, I am going to draw a rectangle but I will not connect the left bottom corner. Instead, I am going to draw a line downward from the two ends that are not connected until they meet. Your rectangle should be pointy like a triangle at the corner.

Tip: The size of your speech bubble will depend on the size of your mirror, since my mirror is thin, I will create medium-sized bubbles.

Step 3: Now that you have created the first speech bubble, you will need to create more for each affirmation that you wrote down on your list. Tip: To make your mirror more exciting, you can draw speech bubbles in various shapes such as a circle or cloud!

Step 4: Once you have drawn a speech bubble for each positive affirmation, use your scissors to cut each speech bubble out.

Step 5: Now, using your writing tool, write each affirmation in each speech bubble.

Step 6: Now, we will create a label to go at the top of the mirror. Get a sheet of construction paper and hold it the wide way. Then, using your writing tool, draw a big rectangle. Then, write “I AM…” in big letters in the rectangle. Next, use your scissors to cut out the rectangle. This will go at the top of the mirror so that when we read these affirmations out loud we will start with “I am…”

Step 7: Next, get your mirror, speech bubbles, and tape. In this step, we will tape the label to the mirror. First, take a piece of tape and fold the short end over to the other short end so that it sticks to itself. The tape should be tube shaped and sticky on both sides now. Then, attach the tape to the back of the “I AM…” label. Then, tape it to the mirror. We’re almost done!

Step 8: Now, use the tape to attach all affirmations to the mirror. Now we’re done!

Alternative Activity: If you do not have a mirror, don’t worry you can still participate in this activity! Instead of using a mirror, you can tape each affirmation to a long piece of string to create a self-esteem banner to hang up in your room!

Your self-esteem mirror is now done! Be sure to clean up your area and put away all materials. I hope you enjoyed making it as much as I did! Now when you use your mirror, you will see these positive affirmations about yourself and hopefully it will help you feel confident in your abilities every day!
