S'more Snack Mix

Updated: Jun 14, 2021

Today we are going to make a tasty s'mores snack mix! This snack mix is a very fun and interesting take on smores that is not quite as messy as traditional s'mores but just as delicious. Kids of all ages can enjoy making this treat and school age and adolescent kiddos can likely do this with little to no help. It will help them hone their fine motor skills. Additionally it can encourage creativity and even a little bit of sensory play as we handle ingredients with many different textures!

You Will Need:

8 cups Rice Chex cereal

2 cups mini or crushed Graham crackers

16 ounce bag of mini marshmallows

½ cup butter

2 ½ cups chocolate chips

3 cups powdered sugar

¼ cup cocoa

1 tsp cinnamon, optional

Activity Steps:

Before starting, remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water. Since we are handling food, you want to make sure your hands are nice and clean!

Step 1: First we are going to combine the rice Chex, crushed graham crackers, and marshmallows in a large mixing bowl.

Tip: if your graham crackers are not crushed you can easily crush them! Just place them in a ziplock bag and use a cup, back of a spoon, or even your hand to break the crackers into pieces.

Tip: if you do not have graham crackers, try Golden Grahams cereal or any other graham cracker flavored cookie. Any variation of graham cracker will do, just make sure whatever you use is in small pieces!

Step 2: Set the mixture in the large bowl to the side. Next, add the chocolate chips and butter to a smaller, microwave safe bowl. You can use your favorite chocolate. I used semi sweet and white chocolate chips! If you are using cinnamon, add that to the chocolate and butter as well.

Step 3: Place the microwave safe bowl in the microwave for 1 minute to start. When the minute is up, make sure to stir the mixture even if it doesn’t look like anything is melting yet.

Keep microwaving the chocolate 20 seconds at a time and be sure to stir after each 20 seconds. When the chocolate is smooth and melty, remove it from the microwave.

Tip: if your bowl gets hot in the microwave, please use an oven mitt to handle it or ask an adult for help.

Step 4: Carefully pour the melted chocolate over the cereal mixture. Use a spoon or spatula to carefully stir the cereal and chocolate together. When the cereal mixture looks evenly coated, set it aside.

Step 5: Now we are going to make a delicious coating for the snack mix. In another small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and cocoa together. You can do this by stirring with a spoon, fork, or even a whisk.

Step 6: Then pour the powdered sugar and cocoa mix over the chocolate covered cereal. Stir the mixture well so every piece of cereal and graham cracker is covered with the powdered sugar coating.

Step 7: Lastly, spread the snack mix out on a wax or parchment paper lined baking sheet in a single layer. Allow it to cool.

Once the mix is cooled, you can store it in an airtight container.

Now you have your s’mores snack mix! I can imagine the campfire and toasty marshmallows as I eat this tasty snack and I hope you can too. Enjoy!
