Peanut Butter & Jelly “Sushi” Rolls

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

By using limited ingredients and tools, this is a very easy and safe activity to get kids excited about making their own snacks and meals! School aged and adolescent children will be able to complete this activity on their own with limited or no supervision. Preschool aged children will also enjoy this activity but will need supervision and may need some parental help. All kids will develop confidence and skill in the kitchen while practicing following directions. Enjoy your PB&J “Sushi” for lunch or a snack once you have finished making it!

Materials:

Bread

Knife

Peanut Butter

Jelly of choice

Rolling pin or soup can

Let's Get Started!

Step 1: Making a Clean Workspace

First, when working with food or in the kitchen, we need to make sure that we have a nice and clean cooking space! Make sure the area that you are about to use has been wiped with a little bit of soap and a damp cloth! Now, make sure you wash those hands for 20 seconds! What song do you like to sing while you wash your hands?

Then, take a piece of bread and place it on your cleaned kitchen surface. Next using your knife, you are going to cut off the crust.

You will need to tell an adult that you are using a knife for this quick snack, and make sure you ask for help! The crust is that darker brown coloured of bread around the outside of the bread.

Cut off the crust on all four sides of the bread.

Step 2: Roll it Out!

Next, take your rolling pin and roll it on top of the piece of bread until it is thin! Do this by starting your rolling pin at the top of the piece of bread and rolling it down towards you. Then, roll your pin from the bottom and towards the top. Now, roll your pin starting on the left side towards the right side. Roll your pin back towards the left side of the bread starting from the right! Repeat these rolling directions until the piece of bread is thin!

**You can also use a soup can or a canned food can if you do not have a rolling pin at home!**

Step 3: It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

Now, grab your favourite kind of peanut butter! Are you a Skippy or Jiffy peanut butter lover? Again, using your knife, spread some peanut butter so it reaches all the sides of the piece of bread.

Next, take your favourite flavour of jelly and spread it over top of the peanut butter so it reaches all the sides of the bread. Just like in Step 1 make sure you tell an adult you need a knife for this step and to ask for help!

Step 4: Let’s Roll!

Now that you have your peanut butter and jelly spread on the bread, it is time to make them into rolls now! Remember how we do hotdog folds with paper, long side to long side? You are going to roll the bread, long side to long side. Starting at the bottom, roll the bread up tightly.

When you have finished rolling your bread, it will kind of look like a log, and the peanut butter and jelly insides should look like a spiral!

Lastly, using a knife. cut the rolled-up bread into 4 to 5 pieces, or one to two inches in length pieces! Place them on a plate and enjoy!

To make this PB and J sushi snack feel even MORE like sushi, try to eat them with chopsticks!
