Kool-Aid Lip Balm
Updated: Jun 14, 2021

Create your own personalized Lip Balm with just 2 ingredients! This activity is for school-age kids and adolescents who are interested in creating their own personalized lip balm. By using a packet of Kool-Aid and Vaseline, we are going to make a Lip Balm that smells good and keeps your lips from getting chapped! These lip balms are easy to make and small enough to carry with you for when you’re on the go! If you are looking to add some color to your lips, I suggest using the Fruit Punch flavor. If not, try using the Pink or Blue Raspberry Lemonade flavor!

Supplies:
1 packet of Kool-Aid powder (any flavor)
1 spoon full of Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)
2 small container to store your lip balm (condiment container)
A spoon
A microwave safe bowl
A dish towel
Microwave
Instructions:
Step 1: Begin by finding an open space and gathering all of your supplies.

Step 2: First, scoop out one spoon full of the Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) and put it into a microwave-safe bowl. If the Petroleum Jelly sticks to the spoon, use another spoon or your finger to push it off and into the bowl.

Step 3: Then, you are going to microwave this for about 2-3 minutes total. It may be helpful to do 30 seconds at a time and stir the Petroleum Jelly in between. You want the Petroleum Jelly to be a liquid so that the Kool-Aid powder can easily dissolve when we mix it in. Use the dish towel, and maybe an adult’s help to remove the bowl of melted Petroleum Jelly from the microwave (Please be careful, it may be hot).
Step 4: Next, we have to work quickly and safely, because the melted Petroleum Jelly will start to turn back into a solid as it cools down. Ask an adult for help with this step. Take the flavor of Kool-Aid that you chose and add the whole packet to the melted Petroleum Jelly.

Step 5: Now, stir up the melted Petroleum Jelly and Kool-Aid mixture until it is almost all dissolved. There shouldn’t be any clumps of Kool-Aid mix. It is okay if the Kool-Aid powder doesn’t dissolve completely. As you stir, notice how the Petroleum Jelly starts to change colors!

Step 6: Once you have stirred in the Kool-Aid powder with the melted Petroleum Jelly, carefully use a spoon to move the mixture to your small container. Sometimes this step can be a bit messy, so ask for an adult’s help and have some paper towels next to you in case of a spill.

Step 7: Finally, let your tiny containers that are filled with the mixture cool down for about 15 minutes. This gives the Petroleum Jelly time to turn back into a solid so that we can use it as lip balm. After it’s cooled down, you’ll be left with a great smelling lip balm that will keep your lips from getting chapped!
