Edible Legos

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

Lots of us have played and built with Legos, but today we are going to make edible Legos by making Rice Krispie treats. This activity is a yummy and simple treat to make for school-aged children. School-aged children will need additional assistance due to the use of the stove and heating up the butter and melting the marshmallows, because this may cause burns. As a parent, you can assist your child by stirring the butter, marshmallows, and Rice Krispies in the bowl with the use of the hand-over-hand technique.

This will help enhance children’s fine motor skills from mixing, stirring, spreading, and placing. Rice Krispy Legos are a perfect treat or afternoon snack!

Ingredients

5 Cups of Rice Krispie Cereal

¼ Cup of Butter

4 Cups of Mini Marshmallows

1 Large Bag of M&M Candies

1 Can of Vanilla White Frosting

Food Coloring (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow)

Gather all Materials

Mixing Bowl

Saucepan

Mixing Spoon

Greased Pan

4 Small Bowls

Butter Knife

Activity Steps:

Step 1: First, you will wash your hands!

Step 2: After washing your hands, pour Rice Krispie cereal into a large mixing bowl. Set aside.

Step 3: Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Once butter is melted, pour in mini marshmallows and stir constantly until marshmallows are completely melted and smooth. Children might need help melting the butter and marshmallows in a saucepan, just in case they don’t burn it or themselves.

Step 4: Next, pour marshmallows over Rice Krispies and stir together until completely mixed together. Remember marshmallows are sticky!

Step 5: Scoop Rice Krispies into a lightly grease 9x13 pan (you can use the extra butter to grease the pan). Press down using a piece of wax or parchment paper, or wooden spoon until flattened. (It gets sticky!)

Step 6: Let cool completely before proceeding (You can pop them in the fridge for 5 minutes to speed up the cooling). This may take time since you will want to cool your Rice Krispies completely before cutting.

Step 7: Next, gather four small bowls, and scoop ⅓ cup of vanilla icing into each one.

Step 8: Add in 3-4 food coloring drops to each bowl, using the four colors.

Step 9: While the Rice Krispies are cooling, separate out the M&Ms into colors that match the icing you are using. You will need 6 of the same color per Lego Krispie.

Step 10: Cut Rice Krispies into as small or as big of Legos as you’d like. Make sure the tops of your Rice Krispies are as even and flat as possible. Use a butter knife to spread on the icing and smooth it out.

Helpful Hint: Spread the icing gently with a knife, but don’t add too much icing as it may spill over the edges

Step 11: Place M&Ms on top in parallel rows of 3, 6 total M&M’s. Repeat with remaining Rice Krispie treats in varying colors of icing.

Helpful Hint: Place the M&Ms “m” side down so that the “m” doesn’t show

Step 12: Finally, use your creativity and build with your Lego Rice Krispies, and enjoy!
