DIY Playdough

Easy to make at home playdough and fun for kids of all ages! This is the classic method that involves a bit of cooking on the stovetop and many ingredients that are usually in your home already. It lasts for months and allows kids to channel their creativity. Your kids will love playing with this playdough! While this activity is super fun it is also great for helping develop fine motor skills, improving play, and to encourage creativity.

Supplies:

  • 1 cup of Flour

  • ⅓ cup of salt

  • 2 tsps of cream of tartar

  • 1 cup of water

  • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil

  • Food colouring

  • A Pot

  • A spoon

  • A stove

  • Wax Paper

  • Ziplock bag

Activity Steps:

Step 1: Set up your workspace. For this activity you will need a stovetop, a clean pot and wooden spoon. Adult supervision is required; ask an adult for some help! In addition, set out a plate or a sheet of wax paper to put the playdough on to cool at the end!

Step 2: Now that you are all set up, grab your supplies! Add the water and oil to a non-stick pot and heat them on the medium heat setting on the stove. Add your food coloring to the water mixture, to make your playdough colourful and fun!

Step 3: In a mixing bowl combine the flour and salt, and cream of tartar.

Step 4: Make sure your adult is present, as this step has you working with hot water! After the water is hot, but not boiling, slowly add the dry ingredients to the pot and while mixing to combine using a wooden spoon.

Step 5: Continuously stir until the ingredients combine, dry out and begin to form a ball. If your playdough is still sticky, you simply need to cook it longer! Keep stirring and cooking until the dough is dry and feels like playdough. Step 6: Place on a sheet of wax paper or a plate while it cools, for about 5 minutes.

Step 7: Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. Step 8: Playtime!! Now that your playdough is all complete go ahead and have some fun! Optional: cookie cutters make all kinds of fun designs with the play dough.

Step 9: Store the play dough inside a ziploc bag to keep soft!
