Back to School Picture Frame

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

Looking for a fun way to gear up for the start of the school year? How about making your own picture frame! In this fun, hands-on activity, school-aged children can have a fun way to always remember their first day of school. This activity leaves plenty of room for kids to get creative. Let’s see what you can make!

Supplies:

  • Construction paper

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Markers, crayons, colored pencils

  • Photo for frame

Let's Get Started!

Step 1: Fold your construction paper in half (hamburger style) and cut down the middle line. This will create 2 rectangles, but you’ll only need one of them for this project!

Step 2: Place your photo face down in the middle of your construction paper and use a pencil or marker to trace around the photo.

Step 3: Once you have the outline of your photo, you can remove the picture from the paper. Using your scissors, we want to cut out the middle of the rectangle, leaving just the border for our frame. To do this, gently fold your paper in half, trying not to crease it. Use your scissors to make a small slit in the middle. Once you open the paper back up again, you should have enough room to slide your scissors through the slit and cut the rest of the way around the border.

Step 4: Once the middle has been cut out, you can move the paper to the side so all that’s remaining is the border for our frame.

Step 5: Next, it’s time to decorate! You can use your crayons, markers, colored pencils, or anything else you’d like to use to decorate your frame! I used more construction paper and cut out small squares of 3 different colors of paper.

Step 6: After this, I used one square per letter to write out “1st day of school” on the colored paper using my markers

Step 7: Lastly, I glued each square individually on to my frame. I chose to put “1st day of” on the top of my frame and “school” on the bottom, but you can decorate it however you like!

Step 8: To complete the project, you can flip over your frame to the back side and either glue or tape your picture facedown. That way, when you turn it to the front side, your wonderful first day of school photo is shining through ☺
